8 Hours vs. 10 Hours of Wedding Photography: How Much Coverage Do You Need?

6 min read

One of the biggest questions couples have when choosing their wedding photography package is surprisingly simple:

How many hours of wedding photography do we actually need?

Eight hours sounds like a lot—until you start building your wedding timeline and realize just how much happens in one day. Getting ready, details, first looks, ceremony, family portraits, wedding party photos, newlywed portraits, cocktail hour, entrances, speeches, dinner, cake cutting, dancing... suddenly those eight hours can disappear pretty quickly.

As a wedding photographer serving Cleveland, Northeast Ohio, Chicago, Chicagoland, and beyond, I always tell my couples the same thing: there isn't one magic number that works for every wedding.

That's exactly why my two primary full-wedding packages offer different levels of coverage: The Timeless Package provides up to 8 hours, while The Opalite Package provides up to 10–12 hours.

So, which one do you actually need?.. Let's break it down.

Is 8 Hours of Wedding Photography Enough?

For many couples, absolutely!

My Timeless Package includes up to 8 hours of wedding photography coverage and is designed for couples who want the heart of their wedding day documented without necessarily needing photography from the very beginning of getting ready until the very end of the reception.

Timeless includes:

  • Up to 8 hours of coverage

  • 2 photographers

  • 2,000+ photographs delivered in color + black and white

  • Complimentary engagement session

  • Timeline assistance

  • Digital images with printing rights

  • Personalized online gallery

With a thoughtfully planned timeline, eight hours gives us plenty of opportunity to document your wedding while keeping the day moving naturally.

Timeless May Be Perfect for You If...

  • Your ceremony and reception are at the same venue

  • You're getting ready nearby

  • Travel throughout the day is minimal

  • You don't necessarily need your photographer there until the very end of the reception.

Think of eight hours as documenting the heart of your wedding day.

We'll still have time for the moments that matter most while building your photography timeline around your individual priorities.

When Is 10–12 Hours Better?

This is where The Opalite Package comes in.

Opalite includes up to 10–12 hours of wedding photography coverage, making it my most comprehensive option for couples who want their story documented from more of the beginning through more of the end.

Opalite It includes:

  • Up to 10–12 hours of coverage

  • 2 photographers

  • 2,500+ photographs delivered in color + black and white

  • Complimentary engagement session

  • Timeline assistance

  • Digital images with printing rights

  • Personalized online gallery

  • A 10x10, 25-page wedding album

Those additional hours aren't about spending another four hours posing for photographs.

They're about having breathing room.

Opalite May Be Perfect for You If...

  • You're getting ready somewhere separate from your ceremony

  • Your ceremony and reception are at different locations

  • You have significant travel time built into the day

  • You want extensive getting-ready coverage

  • You're planning a first look

  • You have a larger wedding party or family photo list

  • You want golden-hour portraits, or you're planning a grand exit later in the evening.

It's also the package I'd consider if your priority is having your final gallery tell a more complete beginning-to-end story of your wedding day.

What Can Those Extra Hours Actually Give You?

Honestly? A lot.

Imagine two versions of your wedding gallery.

One begins once everyone is nearly dressed and ends after we've captured some dancing.

The other may begin with the quieter parts of your morning—the invitations, jewelry, dress, people getting ready, reactions as everything starts feeling real—and continue into the point of the reception where everyone has officially abandoned any dignity on the dance floor.

Neither version is wrong.

The question is simply: How much of your story do you want preserved?

Don't Forget About Travel Time

This is especially important for my Cleveland and Chicago wedding couples.

If you're getting ready at a hotel, having your ceremony at a church, stopping somewhere for wedding party portraits, and then traveling to your reception venue, that transportation adds up.

Twenty minutes here and thirty minutes there can quietly eat into an eight-hour photography timeline.

If you're planning a wedding with several locations, Opalite's 10–12 hours of coverage can give us significantly more flexibility.

Rather than rushing through portraits because we lost time traveling across the city, we can actually build that travel into your timeline.

What If I Want Getting-Ready Photos AND a Grand Exit?

This is one of the easiest ways to determine whether eight hours will be enough.

Let's say you want photography to begin at 1:00 p.m. while you're getting ready.

If your grand exit isn't happening until 11:00 p.m., you've already created a ten-hour photography day—and that's before accounting for unexpected delays.

If you want your gallery to include the beginning of your wedding day and the very end, the longer coverage available with Opalite will usually make more sense.

And if you're planning an iconic grand exit, I absolutely want to be there for it.

Don't Forget About Golden Hour

Some of my favorite newlywed portraits happen when I steal my couples away from their reception for just a few minutes around sunset.

But golden hour doesn't care about the timeline we made six months ago.

Sometimes sunset lands right during dinner. Sometimes speeches run late. Sometimes the weather finally clears at exactly the right moment.

Having additional coverage gives us more flexibility to say:

“The light is incredible. Let's go.”

Ten quiet minutes outside together can create some of my favorite photographs in your entire gallery.

Why Do Both Packages Include Two Photographers?

Whether you choose Timeless or Opalite, two photographers are included.

That's intentional. While I'm photographing one part of your story, my second photographer can document another perspective.

During a ceremony, that could mean one of us capturing your reaction while the other photographs your partner's. During getting ready, it allows us to divide coverage when needed. During cocktail hour or reception events, it gives us another set of eyes looking for all those moments happening around you.

Your wedding doesn't happen from one angle, and I don't think your final gallery should tell the story from only one either.

Yes, You Get an Engagement Session Either Way

Both Timeless and Opalite include a complimentary engagement session.

Besides giving you another chapter of your story to preserve, your engagement session gives us the opportunity to work together before the wedding.

You'll already know how I photograph, I'll learn how the two of you naturally interact in front of my camera, and when your wedding arrives, we're not meeting as strangers.

We're ready to go.

So... Timeless or Opalite?

Here's my simplest breakdown:

Choose Timeless — up to 8 hours — if:

  • You want comprehensive coverage of the main events of your wedding day

  • Have a relatively streamlined timeline

  • Have limited travel between locations

  • Don't necessarily need photography from the beginning of getting ready through the very end of the night.

Choose Opalite — up to 10–12 hours — if:

  • You want your wedding documented more completely from beginning to end

  • Have multiple locations involved for: getting ready, ceremony, portraits, etc.

  • Want extensive getting-ready and reception coverage

  • Have additional travel involved

  • Want flexibility for golden-hour portraits or a grand exit

  • Simply don't want your photography timeline to feel rushed.

And if you're reading all of this thinking, “Victoria, I genuinely have no idea," that's okay.

Both packages include timeline assistance for a reason. ;)

Your Wedding Isn't a Photoshoot

This might be the most important thing I can tell you. Your wedding day shouldn't feel like one giant photoshoot. Yes, we're going to create some beautiful portraits. But I also want you to experience your cocktail hour. Eat your dinner. Hug your people. Dance with your friends. Take everything in.

As both a wedding photographer and historian, I care just as much about documenting what your wedding felt like as I do about creating the photographs you'll eventually hang on your walls.

Years from now, your gallery becomes a record of who was there, how everyone looked, what you were celebrating, and all of the tiny moments that happened in between.

That's why choosing the right amount of coverage matters.

Still Not Sure How Much Wedding Photography Coverage You Need?

You don't have to decide alone.

When you inquire with Victoria G. Photography, we'll talk through your venues, ceremony time, travel, priorities, planned events, and everything you're envisioning. Then I can help you decide whether Timeless's 8 hours or Opalite's 10–12 hours makes the most sense for your wedding.

Whether you're planning a wedding in Cleveland, Northeast Ohio, Chicago, Chicagoland, or somewhere completely different, we'll build your photography coverage around your wedding—not your wedding around your photography. Ready to find the wedding photography package that fits your day? Inquire and say hello! Let's start preserving your piece of history. ♡
